Historical Legacies

Manali, often referred as the ‘Valley of Gods’ is believed to have a fabled past. The mythological history states that Manali was the abode of the great Sage Manu, the lawmaker of Mankind. It is believed that Sage Manu stepped out of his ark in Manali to recreate the human life, after a devastative flood deluged the whole world. The word Manali is regarded to be the changed name of ‘Manu-Alaya’, meaning the home of Manu. However, the factual history states that the modern Manali was recognized as an exquisite summer resort by the Colonial rulers of erstwhile British India. They used to visit this exotic resort town during the summers to escape the scorching and blistering heat of the Northern Plains.

Artistic Riches

The exotic valleys of Manali is the natural home to several indigenous tribes of the region. The different ethnic tribes follow distinctive cultural patterns and social customs. The tribal community of Kinnaur is one of the prominent indigenous local inhabitant of the valley. The egalitarian society of Kinnaur community believe in equal division of labor between the sexes. Gujjar is another important tribe of the region who are commonly referred to as the wandering tribe of the region.

Blessed with a rich traditional art and craft from the ancient times, Manali is famous for the indigenous folk songs and dance of the region. Accompanied with the enchanting melodious folk songs, the dancers perform their art with perfection and great enthusiasm.

Living the Life

Manali has a unique diversity in its culture and rituals. The fairs and festivals celebrated in Manali are vibrant and carry a great economic and religious importance in the lives of the locals. They portray the innate traditionalism and highlight the rich cultural legacy of the bygone era. The cultural traits and ritualistic patterns have come down from the ancient times and become an integral part of the modern civilization as well. The rapid industrialisation has not affected their cultural traits. Manali is famous for its enchanting and melodious folk songs and indigenous folk dances. The place is also blessed with the rich traditional art and craft forms, from the ancient era. The cultural aspects of Manali display the varied yet so enriched socio-cultural lifestyles of the locale.

Manali Feasting

A famous street food of Manali, the dish called Mittha is a delicacy of Manali commonly available at almost all Manali restaurants. Comprising of rice and raisins, this dish is decorated with dry food for that edge of perfection. Definitely a sinful experience, Mittha should be tried for its rich flavors.
Loads of eateries and cuisine-types, so you’ll have a range to choose from. The best bet would be to try some Tibetan food at Little Tibet. But everyone swear by the German Bakery located near the Mall. Its carrot cake, banana chocolate cake, cookies, brownies, croissants and homemade cheddar and yak cheese are simply wow! And you can even buy some to carry home. The Green Forest Café and Manu Café are located near the Manu Temple and offer moderately priced food, including a range of sandwiches. Café Manalsu is known more for the view it provides over the Manalsu River and the Copacabana Bar and Restaurant is a hot-favourite for its open-air ambience. Mount View, across the Mall is known for its Tibetan, Chinese and Japanese dishes, especially their spring rolls. Chopsticks on the Mall is known for its Chinese and Japanese fares and Hotel Mayur, one of the oldest here, serves great Indian. The Johnson’s Café has their in-house specialty – grilled trout – absolutely heavenly! For South Indian cuisine and filter coffee, Swamiji’s Madras Café is popular and the Himalayan Dhaba on the Mall is known for its delectable aloo parathas!
